Bob Costas: We need to talk about gun culture

In his first television interview since his controversial commentary on the halftime show of NBC?s Sunday night football coverage, sportscaster Bob Costas stood by his remarks on the murder-suicide committed by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher. He emphasized that he was not calling for gun control but rather wanted to push for a candid conversation about America?s gun culture.

Costas has been under fire, much of it coming from right-wing conservatives such as Herman Cain and Mike Huckabee, for promoting a political agenda, despite his agreement with NBC that he has the freedom to editorialize on sport-related subjects. Costas told MSNBC?s Lawrence O?Donnell Tuesday night that he ?only had about 90 seconds?and half of that, or close to half of it, was devoted to another observation?; he said the constricted time-frame may be one reason his comments were open to misinterpretation.

?Where some people may have misunderstood my comments was I took one aspect of it, as expressed by a writer, whom I quoted verbatim. I took one aspect of it. I do not think this is the only aspect or possible aspect. There?s clearly a domestic violence aspect. There?s clearly the question, as I alluded to in a general way, of what effect playing football?which we know has debilitating effects, mind and body, at least for some?what effect that might have had. What effect alcohol and drugs might have had. And another aspect of that is easy access to guns and a gun culture. And it was that aspect?the gun culture?that I focused on. Not to the exclusion of the others but just because I didn?t have all that much time.?

He also conceded in a lengthy radio interview on The Dan Patrick Show earlier on Tuesday that he made a mistake by leaving the gun-control discussion ?open for too much miscommunication.? During halftime, Costas quoted Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock and ended his commentary on Whitlock?s thesis: ?If Jovan Belcher didn?t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.?? Many of his hearers (including? Herman Cain and Ted Nugent) launched a social media attack on Costas, expressing their outrage that the sportscaster had used halftime to make what they saw as a partisan political statement. The clip was uploaded to YouTube where it went viral, attracting scores of angry comments. FOX News hosts called for Costas? termination. Costas addressed those comments tonight on MSNBC?s The Last Word with Lawrence O?Donnell.

?What I was talking about here, and I?m sorry if that wasn?t clear to everyone, was a gun culture. I never mentioned the Second Amendment, I never used the words gun control. People inferred that. Now, do I believe that we need more comprehensive and more sensible gun control legislation? Yes I do. That doesn?t mean repeal the Second Amendment. That doesn?t mean a prohibition on someone having a gun to protect their home and their family. It means sensible and more comprehensive gun control legislation. But even if you had that, you would still have the problem of what Jason Whitlock wrote about, and what I agree with. And that is a gun culture in this country.

It demonstrates itself in different ways. It demonstrates itself in the Wild West, Dirty Harry mentality of people who actually believe that if a number of people were armed in the theater in Aurora, they would have been able to take down this nutjob in body armor and military style artillery. When in fact almost every policeman in the country would tell you that that would have only increased the tragedy and added to the carnage.?

NBC News confirmed details in a Kansas City Star article outlining the last hours for both Jovan Belcher and long-time girlfriend and mother to their three-month-old daughter, Kassandra Perkins. The police report from the Kansas City Police Department shows that Belcher legally owned several guns, and police are testing each one, including the gun found with Belcher?s body, along with shell casings and bullets. Investigators indicate the couple?s history of financial pressures and personal issues was widely-known, and that the Chiefs were providing counseling for them. Still, it wasn?t enough?the couple had a unresolved fight at 1 a.m. the night before. Kansas City police found Belcher asleep in his Bentley on Armour Boulevard. Police believe Belcher arrived home around 7 a.m. the following morning when another argument ensued. This one prompted the shooting.

Belcher?s mother, who had been watching their baby the night before, heard gunfire as she stood in the kitchen. She rushed to the master bedroom where she found Belcher kissing the dying Perkins on the forehead. Belcher got in his car and headed to his other home?Arrowhead Stadium?where the Chiefs had a 9:30 a.m. team meeting. He stepped out of his Bentley with a gun pointed at his head, telling Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli, ?I did it. I killed her.?

Pioli attempted to dissuade Belcher from taking his own life. The linebacker thanked the manager for everything he had done for him. Chiefs Head Coach Romeo Crennel and linebackers coach Gary Gibbs rushed to the parking lot and asked him to put the weapon down. The men heard police sirens and Belcher started to retreat with the gun still pointed to his head. ?I got to go,? Belcher reportedly told his coaches. ?I can?t be here.? And with a single gunshot, Belcher took his own life.

Costas said it was not unique for an athlete?s life to be ruined by the availability of guns.

?Give me one example of an athlete?I know it?s happened in society?but give me one example of a professional athlete who by virtue of his having a gun, took a dangerous situation and turned it around for the better. I can?t think of a single one. But sadly, I can think of dozens where by virtue of having a gun, a professional athlete wound up in a tragic situation.?

Costas believes he helped further a much-needed conversation about America?s gun culture.

?The ready, easy availability of guns makes mayhem easier? The easy availability of guns makes this sort of thing just far more likely to occur. If somebody points out that the country has a problem with nutrition and obesity, that doesn?t mean they?re going to ban fast food. ?But they are making you aware of some of the dangers and hoping to moderate peoples? behavior. And if nothing else, even if some people disagree with me or misinterpret what I said, if it started a conversation then I think that?s a good thing.?

Origin of Romani people? It's India

Europe's largest minority group, the Romani, migrated from northwest India 1,500 years ago, new genetic study finds.

The Romani, also known as the Roma, were originally dubbed " gypsies " in the 16th century, because this widely dispersed group of people were first thought to have come from Egypt. Today, many consider "gypsy" to be a derogatory term.

Since the advent of better and better genetic technology, researchers have analyzed the genetic history of much of Europe, finding, for example, the history of the Jewish Diaspora written in DNA. But though there are 11 million Romani in Europe, their history has been neglected, said study researcher David Comas of the Institut de Biologia Evolutiva at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain

Linguistic history as well as a few limited genetic studies had already suggested the Romani originally hailed from India. To confirm this idea and uncover more details on the migration, Comas and his colleagues used a technique that compares DNA segments from across the whole genome with that of other populations. They used DNA samples from 13 groups of Romani spread across Europe.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Cavemen outdo modern artists at drawing animals

Paleolithic people living more than 10,000 years ago had a better artistic eye than modern painters and sculptures ? at least when it came to watching how horses and other four-legged animals move.

    2. Palace of first Chinese emperor unearthed
    3. Bacteria blamed for world's worst extinction
    4. Planet's deepest spot may hold clues to life

"In our study, we do not focus on specific regions of the genome, but on the genome as a whole, which provides us the complete genetic information of the populations under study," he told LiveScience.

The results revealed the modern Romani's ancestors migrated out of northwest India all at one time 1,500 years ago, Comas and his colleagues reported Thursday in the journal Current Biology. Once they arrived in Europe, they spread across the continent from the Balkan region about 900 years ago, Comas said.

Over hundreds of years of history, intermarriage between Romani people and local populations has waxed and waned, Comas said. They have often been discriminated against; during the Holocaust, somewhere between 200,000 and 1.5 million Romani were killed by Hitler's Nazis. After World War II, Romani in communist nations were often targeted for "assimilation," which sometimes meant forced sterilization to lower their birth rate. [ 7 Absolutely Evil Medical Experiments ]

Comas said he hoped to later widen the analysis to include more Romani groups as well as more Indian populations from the region where the Romani originated.

Sandy's silver lining? Superstorm boosts US auto sales in Nov.

Toyota, Volkswagen and Chrysler were among the companies posting impressive increases for November, which is normally a lackluster month because of colder weather and holiday distractions.

Superstorm?Sandy?gave an extra boost to U.S. auto?sales, making November the best month for carmakers in nearly five years.

Toyota, Volkswagen and Chrysler were among the companies posting impressive increases for November, which is normally a lackluster month because of colder weather and holiday distractions. Only General Motors was left struggling to explain yet another month of weak growth.

Industry?sales?rose 15 percent from a year earlier to 1.1 million, according to AutoData. That was their fastest pace since January 2008. U.S.?sales?would reach 15.5 million this year if they stayed at November's rate, far higher than the 14.3 million rate in the first 10 months of this year.

Americans are more confident in the economy, a key driver of auto?sales. Home values are rising, hiring is up and auto financing remains readily available. And besides just feeling better, people need to replace agingcars?or vehicles damaged by?Sandy, which ravaged the East Coast at the end of October.

"Everything is kind of moving along almost in concert now," says Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting for LMC Automotive, a Detroit-area industry consulting firm.

Sandy?added 20,000 to 30,000?sales?industry wide last month, mostly from people who planned to buy?carsduring the October storm but had to delay their purchases, Ford estimates.

People who need to replace storm-damaged vehicles are expected to drive?sales?for several more months. GM estimates that 50,000 to 100,000 vehicles will eventually need to be replaced.

Even so, carmakers warned that uncertainty over the "fiscal cliff" could undo some of the gains.

The term refers to sharp government spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to take effect Jan. 1 unless an agreement to cut the budget deficit is reached between Congress and the White House. The cuts and tax increases, if enacted, could push the U.S. economy back into a recession and could derail the industry's recovery.

Alec Gutierrez, a senior market analyst with Kelley Blue Book, said a household making $100,000 per year would pay $160 more per month if the payroll tax goes up 2 percent. That's about the same amount as a lease payment on a compact?car. For that reason, Gutierrez suspects some buyers are waiting to see if an agreement is reached before investing in a new vehicle.

But for now, most Americans seem comfortable buying.

At Toyota,?sales?rose 17 percent in November, partly due to post-Sandy demand. Honda was up 39 percent thanks to strong?sales?of the new Accord sedan and clearance deals on the outgoing Civic, which was replaced by a new 2013 Civic at the end of the month. Volkswagen's?sales?rose 29 percent on the strength of the Passat sedan.

But at General Motors,?sales?rose just 3 percent.

GM's biggest brand, Chevrolet, reported flat?sales?over last year despite new products like the Spark minicar. Silverado pickup?sales?fell 10 percent.

GM's?sales?have been trailing the industry all year. They were up 4 percent through October, compared to the industry-wide increase of 14 percent.

Kurt McNeil, GM's U.S.?sales?chief, and other GM executives tried to explain the automaker's disappointing performance.

GM said its competitors resorted to higher-than-usual incentives last month to get rid of 2012 model-year trucks. GM, which had more 2013 trucks on its lots, was offering $500 less per truck than the industry average. GM has been trying to hold the line on costly incentives, which can hurt resale value and brand image.

"We want to be known for great products, not great incentives," McNeil said.

But some analysts think GM will be forced to offer more deals in December to clear out inventory.

At Ford,?sales?were up 6.5 percent on the strength of the F-Series pickup. Ford also saw strong?sales?of its new C-Max hybrid wagon and of the Ford Focus small?car.

Asian brands also got a boost from some unusually big discounts, said Jesse Toprak, senior analyst for automotive pricing site TrueCar.com. TrueCar estimated that Hyundai and Kia, which were admonished by the U.S. government in late October for overstating gas mileage, increased incentive spending by nearly 30 percent. Nissan spending was up 45 percent to $4,273 per vehicle, by far the highest incentives in the industry.

Luxury?cars?saw their usual year-end surge as holiday commercials started crowding the airwaves. Porsche'ssales?rose 71 percent to 3,865, a record month for the automaker. Infiniti, Acura, BMW and Lexus all reported big gains.

Edmunds.com analyst Jessica Caldwell said luxury brands have historically targeted their customers at this time of year because of holiday bonuses. That's no longer a driving factor, she said, but it's still a good time of year for people to buy 2012 model-year luxury vehicles because dealers are trying to clear them out.

Gutierrez said about 70 percent of the vehicles on dealer lots are now 2013 models, so buyers should act quickly if they want a deal on a 2012 model.

If industry-wide?sales?end up at 15 million for the year, it would be a vast improvement over the 10.4 million during the recession in 2009.?Sales?would still fall short of the recent peak of around 17 million in 2005.

Other automakers reporting?sales?Monday:

? Chrysler's?sales?were up 14 percent. Ram pickups were up 23 percent, while?sales?of the Fiat 500 minicar more than doubled.

? Hyundai's?sales?rose 8 percent, led by the Sonata midsize?car?and the Elantra compact. TrueCar said Hyundai increased incentives by 30 percent it was admonished by the U.S. government in late October for overstating gas mileage.

? Nissan's?sales?climbed 13 percent as?sales?of its new Pathfinder SUV more than tripled over last year.

Mental Health Awareness Through Online Sanity Tests

Whenever we feel confused or we don?t understand what is going on, and when we feel that we are getting overwhelmed by the turn of events that we almost lose a grip on reality? we tend to think that we may be going nuts or getting crazy.

Insanity, or madness, is a behavior caused by mental instability. Merriam-Webster defines it as a deranged state of the mind or lack of understanding. Insanity can be considered as poor health of the mind, not necessarily of the brain as an organ, which can affect mental health. People who go insane suffer from a defect in their mental processes or functions such as reasoning.

The term insanity encompasses mental disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. These mental disorders are characterized by social withdrawal, deterioration of personal care, inability to perceive oneself as a separate entity, rapid shifting of thought and topic, autistic absorption, hallucinatory symptoms, delusions and often depersonalization.

Symptoms can be singular or combined with a wide variation among sufferers. Motor activity is generally reduced and appearance become bizarre while perceptual and conversational distortions are evident.

Schizophrenia is a psychotic symptom which continue for at least six months coupled with the deterioration of occupational and social functioning. During a psychotic episode a person is confused about reality and often experiences delusions and/or hallucinations.

Delusions are described as false, inaccurate beliefs that the person holds onto even when he or she is presented with accurate information. When a person?s belief about one?s importance or station in life is grossly out of proportion to what is really true, the person is experiencing grandiose delusion.

A perfect example is someone who claims to being Jesus Christ, or anybody who is an important figure and well-known. On the other hand, when a person believes that there is a conspiracy to harass, punish, or attack him or her, the person is having persecutory delusion. Usually, the person might also believe that the group to which one belongs is being harassed or punished.

Hallucinations are internal sensory perceptions of sights and sounds that are not actually present. People with visual hallucinations may see the image of something that is not real, such as another person. People who have auditory hallucinations hear something that is not really present, such as hearing a voice calling.

Mental health is a concern too often neglected by many of us. Thanks to the Internet, today, there are various websites that you can check which offer online quizzes designed to assess aspects of your mental health, including your risk for depression, anxiety and other emotional disorders.

Sanity tests, which may take up to 15 minutes, are based on scientifically validated mental health assessments. Questionnaires are similar with those that a mental health professional might ask about mood and eating and sleeping habits. According to Dr. John Grohol, a psychologist who has created his own sanity site, the score is a numerical expression of your overall emotional health.

However, the mental health community has not officially sanctioned any test to measure one?s sanity. Therefore, one should not make any drastic health decisions based on these results. Still, the insight into your state of mind may offer self-awareness and could prompt you an overdue discussion with your doctor regarding appropriate therapy. Seeking professional advice to help sort out your mental health concerns and identifying areas of mental stress is always necessary.

Police: Two men claiming to sell insurance, breaking into homes

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - People in Johnson County are on edge because police say two men are breaking into homes by pretending to be insurance salesmen.

One of the victims says the men showed up at her house more than once, and she is afraid they might come back.

They are knocking on doors and claiming to sell insurance policies. In fact, they are claiming to be Jason Barker with Bluegrass Heritage Insurance.

"We don't know who they are. Have no association with us," said Barker.

19-year-old Krista Jarrell says she quickly learned insurance is not why they were there.

"He said we're here for three things: to rape you, to kill you and to rob you," she said.

That is when she called 911 and waited.

"I looked through my kitchen window to see if I could see anybody out there, and when I leaned up to look the guy jumped up with a gun," she said.

She says the men ran when they heard police coming.

"We searched for about an hour, hour and a half, inside the hill. Couldn't find anybody," said Deputy Terry Tussey.

Deputies say Bluegrass Heritage Insurance has been in the area going door to door, but company officials say they want to ensure the public these men are not with them.

"Our business is protecting families. We're not trying to take advantage of or hurt someone," said Barker.

Police say people should be extra cautious who they are opening their doors for. They say if you are unsure at all do not answer the door, and they say if you see anything suspicious call 911.

"I never thought that, you know, this would ever happen. I always bragged about how safe I lived was," said Jarrell.

Officials say the men were last seen driving an older model green pickup truck.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

On the run, software guru McAfee says has left Belize

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - U.S. anti-virus software guru John McAfee said on Monday he has left the tropical paradise of Belize, where police want to question him in connection with his neighbor's murder.

McAfee has been in hiding since police said they wanted to question him as "a person of interest" about the murder of fellow American Gregory Faull, with whom McAfee had quarreled.

McAfee says he believes authorities in Belize would kill him if he turned himself in for questioning. Belize's prime minister has called the 67-year-old "bonkers".

"We are not in Belize, but not quite out of the woods yet," McAfee wrote on his blog www.whoismcafee.com, saying he was accompanied by two journalists and a woman called Sam.

He said he had sent a body double to the Belize-Mexico border to act as a smokescreen and help him elude authorities.

"My double, carrying a North Korean passport under my name, was in fact detained in Mexico for pre-planned misbehavior," McAfee wrote on the blog.

"But due to indifference on the part of authorities (he) was evicted from the jail and was unable to serve his intended purpose in our exit plan. He is now safely out of Mexico."

Police in Belize say McAfee is still at large and are looking for him.

"We still believe that he is here, somewhere in the country," said police spokesman Raphael Martinez.

McAfee, who started McAfee Associates in 1989, has been living in the tiny Central American nation for about 4 years.

More progress expected from Fabulous Imogen in A2 480m Flat at Perry Barr

Although Fabulous Imogen is stepping up in class, she should not be totally written off in A2 480m Flat at Perry Barr on Sunday, December 2nd. Her progressive journey came to halt a couple of weeks ago, when she suffered a humiliating loss at the hands of Carlow Mist in Grade A3.

It was a rough ride. After getting crowded at the very first bend, the black bitch was in no position to make an impact. As a result, she ended up last on the table. Quickly getting her act together, the J.H. Smith-trained demonstrated a fascinating show last time around.

In an A3 meeting, she took the top prize by a neck?s distance. The bitch was soon away, and subsequently railed brilliantly. Although the margin of victory was not big, the experts really admired her effort.

After covering 480 metres in just 29.01 seconds, the daughter of Droopys Maldini is full of spirit. So, we expect her to continue progress, and seal the victory here today. The draw is hugely in her favour. Starting from the red box will surely give her an ideal opportunity of taking advantage in the early stages.

Other hounds in the pack are: Ben Gorm, Slaming Sam, Carlow Mist, Myleens Request and Home Ross. The exciting affair is scheduled to get underway at 12:04 GMT. The sponsors have reserved a prize of 117 pounds for the successful runner.

Myleens Request may have to come from last to win. Without any doubt, it is a very stiff task for her. Slaming Sam was really disappointing last time, when completing the order of finish. The brindle dog is expected to show improvement, but a winning effort is unlikely.

Home Ross has plenty of experience under his belt. The draw is a concern though. Carlow Mist is flushed with pride after a couple of narrow victories. The black dog is on our shortlist.

Ben Gorm could play a significant role, only if things go to the plan. Any inside crowding will help his cause, but more than one hundred percent is nevertheless required to beat this opposition.

Activating ALC1: With a little help from friends

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Chromatin remodeling?the packaging and unpackaging of genomic DNA and its associated proteins?regulates a host of fundamental cellular processes including gene transcription, DNA repair, programmed cell death as well as cell fate. In their latest study, scientists at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research are continuing to unravel the finicky details of how these architectural alterations are controlled.

Through a series of biochemical experiments, Stowers Investigators Ron Conaway, Ph.D., and Joan Conaway, Ph.D., and their team discovered that chromatin remodeling enzyme and suspected oncogene ALC1 (short for Amplified in Liver Cancer 1) is activated through an unusual mechanism: Its shape shifts in the presence of its activators. Their finding identifies a new instrument in cells' molecular repertoire of chromatin-remodeling tools and a potential cancer therapeutic target.

One of the main tasks of chromatin remodeling enzymes, Ron Conaway explains, is "to make DNA accessible so events like repair and gene transcription can occur." Postdoctoral research associate and first author Aaron Gottschalk, Ph.D., previously figured out that ALC1 required protein partners to activate its remodeling function. Publishing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, he dissects the mechanism by which this occurs.

ALC1 and its ilk have a common protein domain, SNF2, that uses the energy of ATP hydrolysis to move nucleosomes?the basic repeating units of chromatin?around, in a process called nucleosome sliding.

"I was intrigued because ALC1 has a unique macrodomain not found on any other SNF2 family member," Gottschalk says. His interest was further piqued when he found that while most ATP-dependent chromatin remodelers function as large multi-protein complexes, ALC1 appeared to work by itself. At the same time, where most of its group-happy family members readily demonstrated nucleosome sliding activity in vitro, ALC1 was not only a lone ranger but also "completely dead on its own."

Gottschalk deduced that ALC1 may function independently, but it needs a boost from a couple of sidekicks: PARP1, an enzyme that responds to several kinds of DNA damage; and NAD+, the substrate by which PARP1 transfers chains of poly (ADP-ribose) onto itself and other target proteins, in a process called PARylation.

Only when PARP1 and NAD+ are on the scene does ALC1 spring into action, altering the accessibility of DNA by shifting nucleosomes around. Gottschalk's earlier findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in June 2009.

"We then extended this research," Conaway says, "and the upshot of our recent JBC paper is that ALC1 is likely activated through a series of physical interactions. ALC1's unique macrodomain can bind PAR, and protein-protein interactions also occur between ALC1 and PARP1." Gottschalk and coauthor Rushi Trivedi, a graduate student in the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology department at KU Medical Center, developed a novel footprinting assay that enabled this observation. Rather than merely activating ALC1 and moving on, the researchers found that the trio of PARP1, NAD+ and ALC1 hangs out in a stable complex.

"So PARylated PARP1 and NAD+ are allosteric effectors?by binding to ALC1, they alter its state from dormant to active," Conaway says. "It's an interesting mechanism that's different from how most other chromatin remodelers work. It may also help explain other evidence that PARP1 has the ability to rearrange nucleosomes and reorganize chromatin; this could be one way by which PARP1 exerts its influence."

Apart from its role in modifying chromatin structure, not much is currently known about ALC1. It's regarded as a possible oncogene, being found in excess in hepatocellular carcinoma cells and because overexpression of ALC1 in mice induces spontaneous tumors.

PARP1, on the other hand, has attracted plenty of interest as a potential anticancer drug target, due to its importance in maintaining genomic integrity. For example, in breast cancer cells lacking BRCA1 or BRCA2 function, blocking PARP could effectively remove the cells' last line of defense against DNA-damaging chemotherapy agents. To date, no PARP inhibitor has made it past phase III clinical trials, but pharmaceutical companies continue to chip away at the challenges around optimizing this form of targeted cancer therapy.

"A better understanding of the in-depth biochemistry we're uncovering on ALC1 and PARP1 may, in the long term, ultimately lead to new or more refined therapeutic strategies," Gottschalk says.

Meanwhile, having observed that ALC1 comes to life upon interacting with friends, Gottschalk now wants to understand precisely how this activation happens. With a knockout ALC1 mouse model handy, plans are afoot to extend his studies to an in vivo characterization of a chromatin remodeler that boasts an illustrious family pedigree, yet stands apart in the crowd.

Victoria and the Stone Arch

I wrote this story a few years ago for a Creative Writing assignment. I edited it back then. It really needs a redo, but it's been so long and I really don't plan on adding to the story that I thought I'd leave it as it was. Like I said, it's about... 5 years old or so? If you want to give any comments on it, you can.

((Edit!): I copied this from Microsoft Word. I tried when I first copied it to correct any problems from the transfer but I could have missed some. If I did, PLEASE tell me, preferrably in PM so I can fix it. Thank you for your patience.)

Victoria and the Stone Arch

By Jerad A. C. Peckham

Across the dimensions of time and space, in a time far ago in a place where magic is lying in secret, where it is not often found, but it sometimes surfaces. This was one of those times. The setting was a small town of farmers and traveling merchants. One of the farmer?s daughters was going off to say farewell to her friend who was going to take care of his father?s business on the road while his father is ill. She ran through the arch of stone in the middle of the fence. The arch of stone was built over a well and now has a small bowl under a face which holds water for thirsty travelers or to wash your face with. She paused and thought if she should but then decided she was late enough already and continued. She continued over the rocky road, past the fields of other farmers, into the town center. Here, there were mainly stone buildings and wooden carts with a stone well in the middle. She bid farewell to him, a fair journey, safe return, and promised him a joyous return. She felt happy and sad at the same time. ?I will return safely before long, my good friend. Until then, find someone else to talk to and be cautious. You must be careful of who you talk to. Farewell, dear Victoria.? He started the cart and she stood waving until he was out of sight. Victoria turned, confused at his words of caution. But she walked back home.

But when she reached the stone arch, she found a shocking sight. Her father was dead, head struck repeatedly by rocks, face down in the small bowl of water. She screamed and held her father?s motionless body and cried. She cried for ten minutes before she heard the voice. She didn?t know how long it had been calling to her or who it was from. But it was calling her name. ?Victoria. Would you like to know who killed your father? Listen to me. Do you want to know?? She looked around for who was speaking.

?Who are you? Why are you hiding??

?I?m not. Stand.? So she stood. ?Now turn around.?

?But there is nothing but stone behind me. You might hurt me if I turn my back on you. You probably killed my father.?

?Dear, I am trying to help you. Now, turn around.?

She slowly accepted that this was what she must do, so she turned and saw nothing but the stone arch. ?Now we can be face to face.? She jumped back and tripped, falling next to her father?s bloody corpse. ?Do not be afraid.?

?How can you talk? You are stone??

?I am magic. Magic is all over. But it likes to hide. I wish to help you and tell you who killed your father.?

?Who did it then? I will tell the town and they will hold court on him!?

?No, no my dear. First, I must ask you a few favors. Little things that will make me happy. You will perform four things for me over four years. One for each season. After the last of these tasks is completed, then I will tell you who killed your father. Now, before you agree, I must tell you, when I reveal who killed your father, you will want revenge, but you will not get it. No matter how hard you try.?

?I agree.? She thought, Justice. That?s enough revenge for me. I want to see him hanged by trial and then I?ll be happy.

?Good. We shall start now. First, I want you to take all of your father?s possessions that he is now wearing and when the time comes to remove them to prepare his body for his funeral, keep them somewhere safe the way they are. Right after the burial, gather them up and do as I say. Nail his hat to the northern side of the front of the arch. You must throw his shoes into the best crops that you have this year. The rest of his clothes must be buried in this order. Make a diamond with the east point in the middle of the arch, about where you are. On the North, bury his tops. In the west, bury his undergarments. In the south, his socks, and in the east, his pants. Make sure to make it seem as the ground has been undisturbed as much as possible. Can you remember all that??

?Yes.?

?Will you do it??

?Yes.?

?Then go, child. Tell the others of what has happened to your father. And remember, keep them in a safe place and then right after he is buried, you know what to do.?

She wiped her eyes, not noticing that her father?s blood had gotten onto her hands. ?Yes. Thank you.? She ran to the town center and called for them to please help her for her father had been killed.

As the years went by, each season, the face in the stone arch gave Victoria a different task. Things as simple as decorating it in the spring or autumn. But then other things, stranger things, like feeding it the blood of one of the newborn pigs from another farm on Christmas day. Now she was doing all these things for him and keeping the farm her father had left to her. While she kept it well, one crop grew beautifully until a few weeks before harvest, where it then withered and died for no know reason. It was always in the same plot. The one she had thrown her father?s shoes into. She asked the face why this was happening and he told her, ?There are different kinds of magic. Some flow naturally with the world, some cannot work without taking from something else. I use both. I flow naturally with the crop, making it grow, but then I need more energy to continue so I must take the life from the crops. It is not long until our deal will be done and it shall no longer affect you.? She accepted this and went on with her work.

After the final task was done, she went to the face and said to him, ?I have done all that you have asked of me for the time agreed. Now tell me, who killed my father??

?Patience, dear Victoria. For we shall wait until the end of the season. At the end of the season, return here and I shall tell you. But travel as little as possible under the arch until then.?

So she did this for him. And at the end of the season, she returned. ?Now, I have done everything and more then we had agreed on. Tell me who killed my father!?

The face smiled. ?My dear. I am so happy to see how you have grown these four years. And yet, you have not noticed the strange things around you that you would have had you not done what I told you. Your friend never came back from his work he took over for his father. No one has been in or out of the
town since he left. And he left the same day as your father died.?

?You mean he killed him?? She was shocked and in disbelief.

?No. He did not kill him. Child, learn to be patient and not just listen for what you want, but all I tell you. The reason no one has come to the town is because they all have died past the outskirts. Think of everything that was different that day. Your friend left. Your father died. Yes. But what else was there that was different? Do you see now? Ah, I can see by your face that you haven?t gotten it yet so I shall tell you. I killed them. I came to life that day. That is the other thing that was different. I did not make the father ill, no, that was luck. But when your friend left the town, I struck him down. Then I killed your father just before you got here. You see, I am the rocks. I am the stones. I needed a slave to give me extra power accumulated over four years. Blood sacrifices and the energy of the plants. And each animal was more evolved then the last. Starting with rats, then chickens, then pigs, ah, if you had actually thought about what you were doing you would have realized something was off.?

Victoria had grown very angry. She picked up a rock and started bashing the bowl and face. Nothing but crumbling rock was left. But she felt a pain in her hand and jumped back, dropping the rock. It had turned sharp and made her bleed. She heard a voice, not like someone was talking, like a breeze on the wind. ?I am all rocks. Everything around you is rock. You can never escape.? She turned and ran to the town center. There, the stone buildings had collapsed on people, stones seemed to have thrown themselves at the ones not under the falling rocks. Then, they started to laugh. The rocks started to laugh at her. She ran from town. She ran, trying to find someplace that had no rocks. But everywhere she went, it seemed rocks were laughing at her. Shy turned around and saw that they were following her. Even the rocks that had made up the face and bowl she had smashed were following her, making the face with a wide mouth. She ran until she came to a tall tree. She climbed to the top, far above the rocks. ?I?m safe.? She panted to herself. She knew she couldn?t live up there, but she could catch her breath and stay sane long enough to make a plan. But then she saw a bird making a nest in another branch. It set down some rocks. The nest shook as the rocks came to the top. And they formed a small face and started laughing. She stood and screamed. ?WHAT? What else? My whole town is gone! Do you want to torture me my whole life? Or??

?I need one last sacrifice. Haven?t you gathered that yet? If you counted your father as one, then you would have four, but you should know better. I needed my power from the plants first. So, I need your blood.?

?What about all the people in the town? You have their blood!?

?Ah, I didn?t think I would need theirs. I gave their blood to the sand.?

She stood there, unsteadily, having to keep correcting her balance, ?So what do you want? How shall I die?? The face came over under the tree and opened its mouth to reveal water with sharp, jagged rocks on the bottom. She closed her eyes, and Victoria jumped into the mouth of the face in the stone arch, who was powerful enough, to move to another village or town, and do it all over again.

If I remember correctly, I was the only person in my entire class that had someone die in... Any of their stories. Most of the people in my creative writing class were very happy or romantic in their writing where I was very morbid. But, well, that's how it goes. I hope you liked the story. If you did or didn't and want to comment, feel free to. Thanks for reading.

Remote data recovery support

All people asking for remote data recovery can be divided into two groups: home users and specialists of data recovery services. Although they both want the same, namely to recover data, from the operator point of view, the remote support of home users differs significantly from the work with data recovery services.

So, when helping home users to recover data remotely using Team Viewer or similar software for remote access, an operator can face the following most typical issues.

  1. Time zones. Since data recovery may be needed at any geographical location and a client may have his or her own preferable time for remote recovery, sometimes an operator has to work at a rather inconvenient time, for example at night.
  2. Hardware. When you recover data remotely, you cannot know in advance what a PC you have to deal with ? what quality of components it uses, who built it, and so on. You can get some information by looking at Device Manager; however, many facts that would have been obvious at visual inspection cannot be noticed during the remote session. These primarily include loud clicking sound of a hard disk or howling fans. More rare case is when a kitten is playing with USB cables. Often a situation with hardware complicates by the fact that it is practically impossible to troubleshoot hardware issues remotely, so your only choice is to ask a user to provide another PC.
  3. Control. The specific of a remote session is that both an operator and a client share one mouse between two of them; therefore, it is often unclear who controls it. It is very difficult to work when a client always strives to get the mouse and poke something with it.
  4. Privacy concerns. Some users are way too concerned about their private data. From the user point of view, it is normal because private data is the only one of its kind and so is invaluable. From the operator point of view, who sometimes recovers data several times a day, it is just a routine work. Sometimes it occurs that clients are concerned about data privacy so greatly that they persist in their presence during data recovery and want to see the monitor all the recovery time. Taking into account time zone difference and the fact that the recovery process may take several days, the operator?s work is greatly complicated.

All of the above applies more to home users than to data recovery services for which a data recovery process is adjusted to a routine level. Firstly, they have no problems with hardware. Secondly, an operator usually works with the same specialist in a service, so they can arrange with each other once and for all who controls PC in a particular time. Additionally, service specialists are more calm about privacy of client data because they see enormous amount of such data every day. They accept your signature on a confidentiality agreement willingly, being sure that user data is as boring to you as it is to them.

NBA fines Spurs $250,000 for sending starters home

Gregg Popovich sent his best players home, deciding they reached the end of the road before the trip was over.

For that, and for keeping it a secret, the San Antonio Spurs were fined $250,000 by the NBA on Friday.

Commissioner David Stern said the Spurs "did a disservice to the league and our fans" when they didn't bring Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili or Danny Green to Miami for the final game of the six-game trip.

"The result here is dictated by the totality of the facts in this case," Stern said in a statement. "The Spurs decided to make four of their top players unavailable for an early-season game that was the team's only regular-season visit to Miami. The team also did this without informing the Heat, the media, or the league office in a timely way. Under these circumstances, I have concluded that the Spurs did a disservice to the league and our fans."

Teams are required to report as soon as they know a player will not travel because of injury.

The league's statement said the Spurs were in violation of league policy reviewed with the board of governors in April 2010 against resting players in a manner "contrary to the best interests of the NBA."

The Spurs didn't comment on the penalty.

The issue of resting healthy players has been debated before, though usually at the end of the season, not a month into it. And the Spurs have been right at the center of it, Popovich using the rest strategy for an aging team that could use more time off than the NBA schedule often allows.

They even made a joke out of it last season, the box score listing "OLD" next to the 36-year-old Duncan's name as the reason he didn't play.

Stern wasn't laughing Thursday.

He has a nearly $5 billion a year industry to protect and can't like it when teams aren't willing to put their best product on display in a marquee game televised by national TV partner TNT. Fans and viewers were excited about seeing the Spurs try to complete an unbeaten road trip against LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the NBA champions, so there was an understandable letdown when they learned of the absences.

But there's never a guarantee that any players are going to play, and Stern himself has previously made it clear he wasn't going to impose rules to change that.

The Cleveland Cavaliers rested a healthy James for four straight games at the end of the 2009-10 regular season. Owners discussed the issue later that week at a meeting in New York, and Stern reported that there was "no conclusion reached, other than a number of teams thought it should be at the sole discretion of the team, the coach, the general manager, and I think it's fair to say I agree with that, unless that discretion is abused."

In the NFL, the Indianapolis Colts rested a healthy Peyton Manning even with an undefeated record late in the 2009 season, and the league eventually started trying to schedule as many division matchups as possible for the final two weeks of the season in an effort to make late-season games matter.

Popovich doesn't wait until the end of the season to start resting players.

He was both praised and ripped for the way he navigated the lockout schedule last season, twice surrendering 11-game winning streaks by playing without his Big Three. Even those who didn't like it conceded that a coach who had won four championships with what's long been considered the NBA's model organization probably knew what he was doing, and more defense came Thursday night.

"Popovich has done this before and he knows what's best for his team," former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal said on TNT. "It's his job to manage his players and do whatever he'd like. He's thinking about the big picture."

Another former player turned TNT analyst, Steve Kerr ? who played for Popovich ? also defended the franchise's actions.

"If the NBA punishes the Spurs for sitting players, it opens up a huge can of worms," he wrote on Twitter. "This is a serious legal challenge for the league."

That San Antonio ? largely unloved in its championship days but suddenly a plucky underdog cheered by those who felt Stern overstepped his bounds ? nearly won the game before the Heat rallied for a 105-100 victory didn't sway the commissioner.

The league has an expectation that fans paying hundreds of dollars should get what they paid for. On Friday, the Phoenix Suns announced a "satisfaction guaranteed night" next Thursday against Dallas, offering fans a rebate if they didn't enjoy their experience in what the team called a first-of-its-kind promotion in the league.

But nobody buying a ticket can be assured of seeing his favorite players. The Heat occasionally sat their superstars late last season for what the organization termed a "maintenance program," and a late-season matchup against the Celtics included the following DNPs: James, Wade, Bosh and Boston's Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo.

Then there are the neutral-site preseason games the league stages in markets where fans rarely get to see the NBA live. Signs outside the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. before a Celtics-Knicks matchup in October featured pictures of Paul Pierce and Carmelo Anthony, although neither played despite being healthy.

With Stern reaching in now, does he reach that far? Or are there be a separate set of guidelines depending on the calendar?

The league wouldn't clear that up, not commenting beyond its statement. The Spurs were unavailable Friday after a long road trip.

They were resting.

Mountain Biking, an Excellent form of Recreation and Sports

For most, mtn biking is a recreational sports activity wherein riders ride bicycles off-road on tough terrains. The bicycles used for these activity is specifically manufactured to suit these kind of terrains which are generally rough and patchy. Such bikes are preferredly known as mntain bikes. These mountain bikes are especifically suitable for these kinds of environments. These forms of bikes look very similar to any other bike, but they are fitted with special features to increase and improve the ride, comfort and most importantly performance on such terrains.

Terrain biking are of different categories such as hybrid country, dirt jumping and trails to name a few. The most well-liked forms of mountain biking is the recreational and trail driving categories. One can perform mtn biking anywhere like on country back roads, off-road trails, zigzag roads thtough forests, on hills or mountains, flds and on roads. since mountain biking involves journeyling on your own and most of the time being away from the civilization, the rider needs to be self-reliant in the game. The rider is necessary to carry a backpack and be equipped with essential items like water, equipment needed for repairs, a first aid kit, and some emergency food packets in case of need arising from any unfortunate incident like accidents. mtn biking thtough clubs or in groups is very common on long treks. This hobby has gained in well-likedity after the year 1990 and is recognized as a form of recreational sports activity.

Some of the equipments one needs for mountain biking are, a good bike specifically made for performance on terrains which are rough. They have particular exclusive features like dual suspension, broader tires, and flat and raised take care of for comfortable riding posture giving good control for the rider. These make of bikes come fitted with disc brakes and gears to assist in climbing hills which are steep and travel thtough bumpy surfaces. Due to these unique capabilities such bikes are heavier as compared to the regular tour bicycles. A rider also needs to carry sure accessories like helmets, gloves, first aid kit, GPS device, pumps to fill flat tires, a good shoe, instruments for the bike etc.

A Short Guide to Best Management Practices for Lake and Pond ...

Related eBooks

Property owners or managers responsible for the care of lakes or ponds are advised to observe best management practices, or BMPs. These practices, when applied properly, allow one to protect lake water and the surrounding areas, and provide a safe environment for vegetation and recreation. Whether you utilize your lake or pond for outdoor leisure ? including fishing, swimming, and other water sports ? or simply use the space to beautify a commercial property, know that keeping the area clean also helps in promoting a healthy living and/or work space.

What exactly is involved in applying BMPs to lake management? It?s more than a matter of simply keeping the grounds free of litter. A reputable lake management company looks at several factors to ensure your lake or pond remains healthy for plant and animal life to enjoy. Aspects of best management practices normally include the following:

1) Management of Waterfowl. If you have a lake on your property, chances are you have ducks and geese. While ducks can be enjoyable to have around, geese will cause more harm than good. Goose droppings can contribute to the pollution of your water and pose human and animal health risks, so it?s a good idea to employ practices that discourage geese from settling on your property. Repellents that don?t harm your water or vegetated buffers along the edges of your lake are recommended to prevent geese from using your lake.

2) Proper Landscaping. The gardens and grass surrounding your water do affect the health of your lake or pond. It?s important to choose vegetation native to the area, in particular plants that do not rely on artificial fertilizers or chemicals to stay green and vibrant. A good lake management company can inspect your property and advise you on properly landscaping your water property.

3) Soil Maintenance. Gardeners know that soil must breathe in order to encourage growth. As a lake owner or manager, it?s important to control the soil surrounding the water so it does not erode.

4) Pest Control. Standing water attracts bugs. When you find an area infested with mosquitoes and other biting insects, your first instinct may be to eliminate them with pesticides. It may kill the bugs, but chemical-based pesticides can pollute your grounds. There are ways, however, to head off such problems ? the installation of a fountain, for one, helps your water?s movement so it does not stagnate and attract pests.

Lake management best practices ensure the prolonged health of your pond or lake environment. Consulting with a professional pond management company is key in the care of your property.

Self Improvement | Daily positive affirmations for law of attraction ...

How affirmation can be defined??

Thinking positively is the road towards the fundamentals of personal growth. The way you think and the word you speak are the revelations of your affirmations. So your affirmation can be either of ?negative? or of ?positive? denominations. As we keep ourselves busy with our inner dialogue; we keep on shuffling between negativities and positivites. Any one will try to focus on the positivites and keep the negativities at bay. In our daily chores, whatever our inner truth or inner beliefs prompt us; we reveal it through our affirmations.

Our affirmations are our beliefs.

Whatever we think as true, they turn to be our beliefs. That means we are the creators of our own truths. We learn about the truths since our childhood. The truths are been programmed in our sub-conscious mind by our parents, elder siblings, teachers, family members and friends during the early ages of our life. All our thought patterns are not going to serve us during our daily chores, so naturally the affirmations goaded by negativity are replaced by the positivities. As a normal function, our subconscious mind soaks all the beliefs and basing on these beliefs creates a world around us. Our subconscious mind, being powerful, hardly sieves true or false from among their mixes and so incidentally creates the affirmation whatever it finds to be believable.?

If the law of states are to be referenced, ?like attracts like?, i.e. negatives attract negatives and positives attracts positives, whatever are our dominant thoughts they find the ways to get manifested. So, it is desirable that bringing positive changes towards reality, our thoughts must be programmed. The powerful ?arm of positive thinking? should be our daily affirmations in positive way. The reflection must come like,? I can do it, I love this??.etc.? ?An affirmation must meet all the following requirements to become effective:

  • Affirmation should be precise and specific
  • Affirmations needs to be positive, example?(I am healthy, in place of I am not sick)
  • It is desirable that affirmations should be expressed in present tense, example---(I love my fate, in place of I will love my fate)

Suitable time of expressing affirmation

The ideal time to express positive affirmation for law of attraction is in the morning when you get up and also in the night when you go to bed. It is a psychological drill, the more you think about it you will get the faster result of it becoming as a reality. As our subconscious mind becomes programmed to believe the affirmations, it results into conversions into positive actions for our conscious mind. You must feel about its most possible emerging appearance likely to be.

Law of attraction

Here are some useful tools for you to condition yourself according to your desire:

To change yourself you need to change your conditions. Your innermost thoughts may find expressions while you are amidst your ambitions, fancies, wishes and whims. You can relate it with the growth of a sapling from a seed. When we want to change our condition, we need to ponder about its way of changing.
